The Big Ice captures the essence of the world's most extreme continent, from its exceptional geography, geology and history to the innovative research projects currently underway.

Come face to face with heroic Antarctic explorers, stunning wildlife and amazing artistic responses and photography of Antarctica.

Key exhibits are:

  • Ernest Shackleton's sledge, gifted by him following his courageous explorations
  • Sir Edmund Hillary's Ice Axe, used in the famous Trans-Antarctic expedition
  • Real pieces of Antarctica, showing the impact of the extreme environment
  • Antarctic penguins, from majestic Emperor to endearing Adelie
  • An exhibition of photography by NZ renowned artist Grahame Sydney and a variety of work by several other NZ artists
  • Dress up in Antarctica clothing, sit on a real skidoo (snowmobile) and explore Antarctic tents
