Topic: Waikato Museum - Te Whare Taonga o Waikato

Topic type:

With multiple galleries, including the Trust Waikato Art Gallery and the Exscite Galleries, the museum tells the stories of our art, our culture, our history and our innovation.

Waikato Museum exteriorThe Waikato Museum was established in 1987 and is one of Hamilton's largest and more unusual buildings.  The architect was Ivan Mercep of JASMaD, Auckland, the same architect who went on to design New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa.

Mercep has recently been awarded a prestigious Gold Medal by the Institute of Architects (June 2008) for his notable career.

Situated back from the road and near the banks of the Waikato River the building has five levels and 12 galleries.
