A treasure house of Waikato's art, culture and heritage

The Waikato Museum was established in 1982 and is one of Hamilton's largest and more unusual buildings. The architect was Ivan Mercep of JASMaD, Auckland, the same architect who went on to design New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa.

At the Waikato Museum we work together to capture the fascinating stories of this region and the its community through its rich and varied collections and exibitions. These stories help to define who we are, where we have come from, and where we are going.

Each collection item has a story associated with it. While some pieces have had their stories told, there are many others whose story still remains a mystery. Some of these pieces are sitting in the depths of the Waikato Museum, just biding their time, waiting for their stories to be re-discovered.

Telling our stories offers insight into this amazing region and helps to bring the spirit of our region alive. The key to remembering these stories is to record them, cherish them, and pass them on through the generations.

This website is offering a chance to our community to contribute their stories and share their comments about our exibitions.
