Bharata Natyam is one of the ancient traditional dance forms practised in South India (Tamil Nadu).  This dance form is immensely popular not only in India but in many countries across the world.

Bharta Natyam comes from the words Bhava (Expression), Raga (Music), Tala (Rhythm) and Natya (classic Indian Musical Theatre).

Sage Bharata compiled the text of the Natya Shastra in the 4th Century BC.

"Whither the hand goes, the glance follows,
Whither the glances lead, the mind follows,
Whither the mind goes, there the mood follows
Whither the mood goes, there is "rasa" born."
- Abhinaya Darpana

Lord Shiva is praised as the embodiment of the four types of abhinaya (body and hand movement, ornaments and costume, song, mood/emotional expression) in this following sloka:

"Angikam bhuvanam yasya
Vachikam sarva vangmayam
Aharyam chandra taradi
Tam vande satvikam sivam."

The meaning of the sloka is:

We bow toHim the benevolent One
Whose limbs are the world,
Whose song and poetry are the essence of all language,
Whose costume is the moon and the stars...
