Garden Place was upgraded as part of Hamilton City Council's CityHeart project to revitalise the Central business district.

CityHeart design concept for Garden PlaceThe project was planned to be finished in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup held October/November. A temporary ice skating rink was installed in spring 2011. Further changes were made in 2012 to the western end to include a new shared lane - allowing for slow moving traffic and pedestrians - connecting Worley Place with Alexandra Street.

Other improvements in Garden Place included removing the curved brick walls and replacing them with open tiered steps for easier access and seating, next to the lawn, installing a "pop up" fountain type water feature, a new permanent stage, a new outside reading room for the library, and provision for two modern kiosks.

Greatly improved lighting and colourful seasonally-planted movable flower boxes, are some of the measures made to improve ambience. The lawn was re-shaped, and mature trees retained. This was the first time in 20 years that physical work has been carried out in Garden Place, and marked a new chapter in the life of this city space.
