The lilting swinging music of Jimmy Shand's orchestra was the inspiration behind the formation of the Scottish Country Dance Society of Hamilton. When Mrs Peg McAuslan and her husband Archie heard some of the records brought out to New Zealand by a friend, they felt they would love to dance to such music. Friends were approached with a view to forming a club and eventually 15 enthusiastic people became foundation members in the late 1940s. With dancers keen to dance each week and the activity gaining in popularity, it became necessary to form a properly constituted society and this was done on  the 24th of April 1951.

Scottish country dancing is a social form of dancing danced in 'sets' usually with four 'couples' unlike Highland dancing which is usually solo dancing. Scottish dress is not required to attend clubs, dances or balls and you don't need a partner to join a dance club.
