Soccer as a sport is an international favourite. You only have to see the list of countries that participated in the World Cup in 2002 & 2006 to get an idea of how many different ethnic groups are passionate about the game.

Hamilton has an increasingly diverse population. At present 83 different ethnic groups (representing 65 countries of origin) reside in the city and this number is growing. In celebration of this rich diversity, Hamilton is the focus for a number of cultural events such as Indigo - Gathering of Cultures, and the New Zealand Ethnic Soccer Festival.

The purpose of the New Zealand Ethnic Soccer Festival is to bring together these diverse cultures to participate in a commonly shared passion, to show case their sporting prowess and culture to the wider community. The Festival was held for the first time in 2002, with an overwhelming response from a wide range of ethnic groups and was considered an outstanding success. The demand for this event to be an annual one was clearly expressed by participants and spectators alike.
