Gaillardias by John Flint. Prof Peter Wells painted under the pseudo name of John Flint. He says that his paintings are very realistic with surreal themes. He studied under some great painters of Wales. When he was 21, Peter became the secretary of the South Wales Art Society, which is the oldest in UK. Peter says that he always wanted to become an artist, but his father advised him to be practical, so he compromised and did his thesis on surrealism and cubism. When Peter came to Hamilton, the art scene was in doldrums. There was a rundown little building that was known as the 'Art Gallery'. Prof Wells had it cleaned up and opened it every day as against once a week. He became the President of the Waikato Society of Art at Geoff Fairburn's initiation.  Prof Wells gave a series of lectures on modern art and arranged Hamilton's first exhibition of abstract art to which members enthusiastically contributed.

When Auckland refused to let any of their exhibitions to come to Hamilton, Peter arranged for the first overseas exhibition from Canada (which Auckland subsequently begged to share). Prof Wells had several exhibitions in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He also taught watercolour painting at WSA for 12 years.
