Welcome to the Congolese community of Waikato

It's based in Hamilton. Cocowa was formed in February 2004 by the Congolese refugees and migrants living in Waikato region.

Hamilton congolese communityThe Democratic Republic of Congo; formerly Zaïre (also referred to as DRC or RDC its abbreviation in French) is situated in central Africa with a population of 60 million.

Since 1996, a civil war started, it was the reason for millions to flee from their motherland. This war has taken already more than 6 million lives and people continue to die even today. According to the UNHCR last year's report there are more than 47 thousand cases of rape recorded.

  • Activities:
    • Cooking for women
    • Women's fitness walking group (every Monday in winter; Monday, Thursday and sunday in summer)
    • Soccer for youth every Saturday
    • Children's cultural dance practice on Friday nights
    • Sport for fitness for mothers
    • Hygiene for families in need
    • Prayers
    • Counselling for youth and families
