The first student intake for the School of Education, formerly the Hamilton Teachers’ College, was in 1960.  It is now the No1 education school in the country according to government rankings.(*Colleges of education and university scores combined).

Since its formation, the School has educated thousands of pre-service teachers in early childhood, primary, secondary and Māori medium teaching. The 50 Year celebrations involved a series of events in mid to late 2010, culminating in a celebratory gathering on Saturday November 13 for past and present staff and students. This event took place at the WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts.
